Downgrade Controversy
The Downgrade Controversy was a theological dispute in the late 19th century involving Charles Spurgeon and the Baptist Union of Great Britain. It centered on concerns about the decline of doctrinal orthodoxy among Baptists, particularly regarding the authority of Scripture, the deity of Jesus Christ, and the reality of sin and atonement.
On March 1887, Spurgeon published in his monthly magazine, The Sword and the Trowel, an article entitled "The Down Grade".
