Faith is defined by scripture itself. "faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." Hebrews 11:1
Faith must be placed in something. There is no such thing as a disconnected faith, that is placed in nothing.
Also, faith is not a risky leap in the dark. It is the "assurance", the strong "conviction" that what we cannot see, is fact.
