Bashar Al-Assad

Bashar Al-Assad (born 1965) was the president of Syria from his father's death in 2000 to his overthrow in late 2024. From 2011, he led the Syrian Arab Republic during the Syrian Civil War, in which he fought against western-backed democrats and radical islamist extremists.
The fall of Damascus in December 2024 caused Assad to flee to Russia, leaving the city to be conquered by the rebel leader Abu Mohammad al-Julani. This marked a significant change in the social, political and religious landscape in the country, with some fearing that the imbalance of power could lead to the persecution of Syria's Christian minority.
